Track Review

That dog is pretty fuckin cute right. Look at that lil guy - what’s he working on? The screen doesn't even look like it’s switched on. Dumbass.

Despite what many pessimists and people who were born in the wrong generation might say, I think British music is in an incredibly healthy and creative place at the moment. If you know where to look, there are some exceptionally talented artists out there creating music that sounds different and fresh, revitalising a once stagnant and Ctrl C + V market.

No one exemplifies this renaissance better than Jim Legxacy. The London-based rapper/producer had a breakout 2025 with the release of Black British Music - a mixtape that cannot be defined by a single genre. Legxacy effortlessly strings together Afrobeats, alt rock, hip hop and lo-fi against a backdrop of grief, and the downsides of fame. Throw in some eclectic sampling and stellar production and you’ve got an unavoidable future classic.

idk idk arrives as Legxacy’s first solo release since appearing on frequent collaborator Dave’s third album and also a track with rising star Chri$DaPrince. As of right now, I am still unsure if idk idk is a standalone single or whether we’re gearing up for another album campaign.

Either way, this new track is so fucking gorgeous. The two and half ish minute runtime is underpinned by a soul sample which I cannot for the life of me identify. Legxacy already sounded confident on BBM with his creative risks paying off and then some. Having the sample take the main stage and still be able to add your own flair without the whole thing becoming a gimmick is a sign of both assuredness and being a really fucking good producer.

Jim pairs the confidence in his production with a vulnerability that was laid bare on BBM. The jittery drums and scattered pianos pair with a trepidation in his lyricism - “If I gave them everything and they don’t love me? I don’t know”. His ability to sound bold and dynamic while ruminating on his flaws, grief and anxieties is a difficult ask but he manages this easily.

Great fucking track. If you asked me who is the most talented artist in the UK at the moment, I’d reach for Jim Legxacy with no hesitations. After BRIT Award nominations and winning Best Male Artist at the MOBO awards, 2026 could be another big year for Legxacy. What exactly his next project will look like is still unknown but the door is wide open for him to dominate the UK underground rap scene this year.
